“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
Romans 12: 15 teaches use to “rejoice with those who rejoice.” This month, Bruce and Connie Queen are beginning their transition to a new home in Nebraska. We celebrate with Bruce as he begins his new job and pray that they find happiness in their new adventures.
This week we are privileged to spend some time celebrating the 90th Birthday of our sister in Christ, Evelyn Sansom. Evelyn has been a part of the Gunter community for over 50 years. A great part of that time was spent with her husband Burnell raising their two children, Butch and Marcia.
Evelyn shared some of her memories of the Gunter community and described some of the changes she has seen over the past half-century. She reflected on many of the businesses that used to be such a central part of Gunter culture: Red Rascoe’s Gunter Cafe (the best pies ever, according to Evelyn), Buck Autry’s general store, Lowrey’s Cleaners, and Barrett’s Grocery store, among others.
Evelyn spent many years working as a seamstress for sewing rooms in Van Alystyne and Celina, as well as at Hilltop Haven nursing home where she mended clothes for the residents. At other times, Evelyn worked from her home, sewing for members of the community.
On November 17, at 2:00 p.m., at the Valley Church of Christ event center, a party will be held in her honor. Sadly for our congregation, Evelyn will be moving to Berryville Virginia, to be close to her son, Butch. While we will miss her here in Gunter, we are happy for the family and the time they will be able to spend together. We will miss you, Evelyn! And Happy 90th!
